Sculptures on Water
by Nicholas John Street
The flow of the river is imperceptible
The surface, covered with eddies
Confuse the direction of flow
A snapshot becomes
A temporarily sculpted texture
Reflects light, harbours shadow
Then flows into motion
Birds land
Boats pass through
Create their own eddies
Start in motion
Ripples that appear
To continue indefinitely
And yet are absorbed by the river
Beneath these temporary creations
The flow of the river is imperceptible
