Statue of Liberty

by Penelope Tippen
It is not the Statue of Liberty
but
surely there are huddled ghosts
there
that longed to be free.

It is not the Mayflower
or
the ships of middle passages
that
broadened your visage in a
common destiny.

It is not the cities
that
were built of blood, sweat
and tears, yet grew
in
spite of themselves.

It is the Plains of Abraham
that
symbolize our history and
shared hope for the future
of
Canada!

O Canada! O Canada!
as
great as you are
You have not the Statue of Liberty
but
are mother to her children who
sought the Northern Star.
